Bangor Teen Builds Deck for Ross Manor

 NEWS RELEASE

June 25, 2009

(Bangor, Me)- Residents at Ross Manor now have a special place they can go to enjoy the outdoors thanks to Jennifer Leach, 18, of Girl Scout troop 355 in Bangor.

Jennifer had the idea to build a deck after volunteering at Ross Manor in 2007. “After talking with many of the residents, I realized some of them had either grown up on farms or have spent much of their lives enjoying the outdoors. I truly enjoy the outdoors as well, and I felt the residents should have a special place to go,” explains Jennifer.

In 2008, Jennifer began planning the deck to earn her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award given to girls, age 14 -18, by the Girl Scouts of America. Jennifer had to spend a minimum of 60 hours on the project, and with the help of local businesses (American Concrete, Aubuchon Hardware, Crescent Lumber, and Lane Construction) and other volunteers she completed the project in May of 2009.

“We are so grateful for the hard work that Jennifer, many volunteers, and local businesses have put into this deck. The residents of Ross Manor will enjoy this deck for many years to come,” says Garth Berenyi, director of Ross Manor.

Ross Manor will be hosting a special ceremony on June 29 at 2 pm to thank Jennifer, the local businesses, and volunteers that contributed to the project. Media is welcome to attend. If you plan on attending, please contact Karen Cashman, APR, senior communications specialist, EMHS (973-6164 or 949-3894).
